Concrete pool decks are one of six inspections on a Pearland pool permit
On the City of Pearland's swimming pool submittal, six inspections are named: pool stake out, rough steel, electrical, plumbing-sewer, pool deck and final.
So the city treats the deck as part of the build rather than as decorating at the end of it. We write the thickness, the reinforcement and the slope on every deck quote for the same reason (including on a deck we are replacing years later).
The cheap version of this work skips all three: a thin slab poured tight against the coping, falling gently toward the water, finished smooth enough to be slippery the first time somebody climbs out.

Pool deck resurfacing works on a level slab; a sunken or cracked-through deck gets replaced
Check two things first. If the deck still sits level against the coping and its cracks are hairline, an overlay renews the surface for roughly half the cost of a new pour.
If a section has dropped or heaved, or a crack runs right through with edges that no longer line up, an overlay copies that crack within a season, so the deck comes out and gets repoured.
A new deck around a new pool
A new pool deck is a reinforced slab poured on prepared ground once the shell is in and the pool contractor is clear. We pour at 4 inches over compacted base with mesh or #3 rebar chaired to mid-depth, hold an isolation joint at the coping and at the house so three structures are not tied into one, and set the fall away from the water.
Replacing a deck that has failed
A deck that has cracked, dropped at a joint or lost the support underneath comes out to the nearest existing joints rather than being skimmed over. We haul it away, rebuild and compact the base, then repour at full thickness with new steel dowelled into the concrete that stays. The haul-off is priced on the same quote as the pour, and so is a plain warning about color: new concrete does not match concrete that has been in the sun for fifteen years.
Resurfacing a deck that is sound but worn
Where the slab is structurally intact and the problem is the surface — worn, stained, slippery or simply dated — a polymer-modified overlay bonds a new wearing surface onto it at roughly half the price of replacement. The existing surface is mechanically ground rather than washed, and every joint in the old slab is carried through the new one. Over a deck whose cracks are still moving, an overlay buys a season.
What we do not touch, and who does
We pour flatwork. Pool shells, gunite and plaster, tile and coping, pumps, plumbing and bonding are a pool builder, a plasterer and a licensed electrician. We pour the deck around what they leave us, to the footprint on the approved plan.
Worn but sound: concrete resurfacing. Sound but faded or slippery: concrete sealing. Cracked or dropped: concrete repair. Outdoor living away from the water: concrete patios. A pad for the pump or a shed: concrete slabs. The run from the street: concrete driveways. A pattern pressed into the surface: stamped concrete. Everything else: concrete services.

Pool deck drainage runs away from the water, never toward it
A deck that drains toward the pool sends dirt, grass clippings and whatever else is on the surface into the water every time it rains.
A deck with no fall at all is worse on this ground, because water that cannot soak away simply stands where it landed. We set an eighth to a quarter of an inch per foot away from the coping, with a stated point the water is meant to leave by.
Concrete pool decks are broomed or textured so wet feet get grip
A smooth, troweled finish is slippery when it is wet, which is dangerous when someone climbs out of the pool with wet feet.
A broom or textured finish gives them something to grip.
Color matters too: a dark deck gets hot underfoot in a Gulf Coast summer. Both the texture and the color are their own line on the quote, so the choice is yours.

Concrete pool decks fail on three things: drainage, ground movement and backfill
Water that has nowhere to go once it leaves the deck
Coastal-prairie clay drains very slowly, so water that runs off a deck does not disappear into the lawn beside it — it sits there, then works back under the slab edge.
That is why the fall gets a stated direction and a stated destination on the quote rather than being described as "sloped away". Where the yard cannot take it, the honest answer at the estimate is that the drainage is part of the job.
Three structures that move on three different schedules
A pool deck sits between a rigid pool shell and a house foundation, on clay that changes volume with the season. Cast tight against either one, it cracks along the join.
Isolation joints at the coping and at the house cost almost nothing while the forms are open and cannot be added afterwards. Control joints are cut to a plan you see before the pour, not wherever the saw lands after it.
Ground beside a pool that was dug and put back
The ring of soil around a shell was excavated and backfilled when the pool went in. Put back loose, it keeps settling for years, and a slab bridging it goes down with it.
We compact the full footprint before any steel is set, and where the ground beside an existing pool has already dropped we say so at the estimate and price rebuilding the base rather than pouring over it.

Concrete pool deck cure times: walk after 48 hours, 28 days to full strength
Heat is the risk here, not cold. NRMCA CIP 11 notes that in hot weather a higher initial curing temperature gives rapid strength gain and lower ultimate strengths, so a summer pour gets water curing.
Design strength is assessed at 28 days (NRMCA CIP 35); curing and hot-weather guidance from NRMCA CIP 11. The walk-on and drive-on dates are trade practice, and the ones for your pour are written on your quote.
