The width, the radius returns and whether your street allows a new drive at all
The City of Pearland's driveway application states that driveway widths shall be no less than 10 feet and that radius returns shall be no less than 5 feet, so both are fixed before the layout is drawn. The same form states that no new residential driveway shall be permitted on streets classified as major collectors or greater, which is a question about your street rather than your house. We check the street classification at the estimate, not after a permit comes back refused.
The culvert under the approach, and who installs it
The form requires that all culverts shall be of approved materials and that all other culverts shall be required to extend 5 feet beyond the edge of the driveway. The slab, the steel and the ground under both

Widening the approach costs least while the forms are still open
A turnaround, a third parking bay or a wider approach is the cheapest concrete on the job while the forms are up and the truck is on site, and the most expensive once the crew has gone.
Two things change with the extra width. More water has to arrive somewhere, so fall is set across the whole footprint rather than strip by strip; and at the street the pipe has to run further, because a culvert must extend 5 feet beyond the edge of the driveway. Both are decided at the estimate, standing on the drive.
What a new driveway has to survive on this ground
A drive here is loaded from underneath by clay that changes volume and from above by whatever parks on it, on a lot that does not drain by gravity.
Coastal-prairie clay moves under the longest slab on the lot

A driveway is almost entirely exposed surface, so it feels that more than any slab under a roof. Early starts and a proper wet cure are what keep the very top of the slab from flaking off years later.
