- Slab thicknessThe depth in inches for your job. Four to five inches is the residential standard; six to eight is what heavier vehicles or poor soil call for, and this ground often calls for it.
- ReinforcementRebar or mesh, the size, and the spacing — and that it is chaired to mid-depth. Steel resting on the ground under a slab is not reinforcement.
- Joint spacingWhere the control joints fall and how deep they are cut, drawn before the forms go in. Concrete cracks either way. Joints decide whether it cracks where you chose.

On ground that drains slowly, that stage decides what your patio or driveway slab looks like in ten years. After the pour the only remedy is a saw.
Rebar sized for the clay, tied and chaired to mid-depth
Reducing the steel is the easiest way to take a few hundred dollars off a quote, and the fastest way to lose a slab. It is a common reason a slab ends up needing concrete repair.
So the rebar is sized for the ground, tied, and chaired clear of it. Steel sitting underneath a slab rather than inside it does nothing at all.

A concrete patio is a reinforced slab poured on prepared ground, normally 4 inches thick and sized to the furniture that ends up on it. We form, pour and finish patios using 3,000 to 3,500 PSI ready-mix, 6x6 welded wire mesh or #3 rebar chaired to mid-depth over 4 inches of compacted base, with control joints cut to a quarter of the slab depth and spaced 8 to 12 feet apart. Every patio quote states the thickness, the reinforcement, the joint layout and the finish before anything is poured.

Concrete repair covers three separate failures: a crack that is widening, a surface that is flaking apart, and a panel that has dropped. We rout and seal moving cracks with polyurethane sealant, inject structural cracks with epoxy, and saw-cut failed panels out to the nearest joints before rebuilding the base and repouring at full thickness. Every repair quote names which of the three you have, and says plainly what it does not fix.

What this ground does to concrete — and what we do not fix

Pearland recorded 49.2 inches of rain in Hurricane Harvey
During Hurricane Harvey in August 2017, 49.2 inches of rain was recorded at Mary's Creek at Winding Road in east Pearland — a total that broke a 40-year state record for rainfall from a tropical system, and the fire department handled more than 400 water rescues.
That is the extreme, not the everyday. It is why flatwork here is judged on where the water ends up, and why every quote states the fall as well as the slab thickness.
The ground under most of this area swells and shrinks with the weather
The soils across this coastal prairie are clays formed on Beaumont Formation deposits, and the USDA classes them as smectitic — the clay mineral that takes on water and swells, then shrinks as it dries.
A slab is loaded in bending as that happens underneath it. Nothing stops the movement, so thickness, reinforcement sized for the ground and joints cut to a plan are what decide whether the slab survives it. Lots vary across the city, which is why we look at yours.
A summer pour gains strength too fast and ends up weaker
NRMCA CIP 11 puts it plainly: in hot weather, a higher initial curing temperature gives rapid strength gain and lower ultimate strengths. It recommends water curing and sprinkling to bring summer curing temperatures down.
Two things also go wrong on site in heat: water added to the mix to keep it workable, and finishing started while bleed water is still standing. Both weaken the very top of the slab, and both show up later as a surface that flakes.
We repair flatwork, not house foundations
A slab that has dropped as a whole is a lifting job, and a house that is moving is a foundation job. We do neither — no foam lifting, no mudjacking, no piers, no underpinning — and there are specialists here who do only that.
Where the panel itself has failed, it comes out to the nearest joints and the base is rebuilt before anything is repoured. You are told which of the two you have at the estimate rather than after the invoice.

Heat is what moves these dates here. NRMCA CIP 11 warns that a higher initial curing temperature gives rapid early strength gain and lower ultimate strengths, so a summer pour is water cured rather than left to race.
